May 15 Flight Log

Eflite Opterra 1.2m

Today I got to fly with my good friend Dave! There was success and a good bit of pain. I received a used Opterra 1.2m for Christmas a couple years ago. However since i havent been flying I hadn’t had a chance try it yet. When Dave invited me to come out for a flight day I decided it was time for my maiden! I had a Runcam Split that I setup as a modular case so I can use it on multiple planes so I wired that up and set it up in the Opterra.

My First Flight

The first flight didn’t go well. It was very nose heavy and struggled to gain altitude even with elevons pulled all the way back. I should have killed the throttle when it hit the ground, but I had tunnel vision and was just trying to fly. The plane hit a telephone pole and looked like it exploded. But the damage wasn’t that bad. The wings are designed to pop off, and the only real damage was the nose. Dave is a master at gluing and helped me make it good as new. We also removed the weight from the nose cone.

Dave’s First Flight

Dave was maidening the F-27 Evolution equipped with an Admiral RX600SP Receiver, The receiver has stabilization built in, but we were not very successful getting it to work well. This first flight was quite stressful, but I was shocked with the graceful landing!

My Second Flight

My second flight was pretty great! It still struggled to climb even I flew line if sight the whole time since my fpv goggles were beeping with a battery warning. That didn’t make sense because the batteries were freshly changed, still I didn’t want to risk losing video and then crashing or losing the plane. So I just flew line if sight. This was easy since I have safe mode on this model. Removing the weight from the nose seems to have worked.

Dave’s Second Flight

After adjusting the sensitivity of the flight controller Dave gave the F-27 another shot. This one wasn’t much better. We are both pretty unhappy with the performance if the Admiral RX600SP Receiver’s stabilization. Who knows maybe we missed something, but we both read the instructions completely and there are no obvious issues with our setup. Looked like the cowl and nose were damaged a bit, but Dave will have it back in action soon I’m sure.

My Third Flight

Third flight was fine. . . but the launch was painful. The prop cut my finger on launch and flight day ended with four stitches!
